Kenmerken

 Behoren tot de Suborder Brachycera / superfamily 'Calyptrae' (dit laatste onderscheid wordt niet gemaakt in Fauna Europaea). «Their closest relatives are the house flies (Muscidae), 'blue-bottles' (Calliphopidae), 'flesh flies' (Sarcophagidae) and some smaller families - the Rhinophoridae and Oestridae.» (tachinidae.org). Larven zijn parasitair op dierlijk weefsel, meestal in larvestadia van de gastheer (vaak vlinders, soms kevers ea, bijna nooit andere vliegen).
Typisch zijn de borstels op borststuk en achterlijf en zeker het opgeblazen scutellum.

Indeling

Calyptratae Calyptratae is a subsection of Schizophora in the insect order Diptera, commonly referred to as the calyptrate muscoids (or simply calyptrates). It consists of those flies which possess a calypter that covers the halteres, among which are some of the most familiar of all flies, such as the house fly.
