Cheilosia canicularis (Panzer 1801).
De Nederlandse naam 'gitje' verwijst naar de zwarte (glanzende) kleur van de vliegen ('git' is een harde zwarte delfstof die gebruikt wordt in sieraden, vandaar 'gitzwart')

Deze soort werd opgesplist in drie soorten. C. himantopus (Panzer, 1798) en C. orthotricha kwamen erbij. De
verschillen staan beschreven in het Phegea-artikel ¹. Bij determinatie met het blote oog kan men afgaan op de latere vliegtijd van C. canicularis (half juli tot en met begin oktober).
Gedetermineerd door Frank op syrphmail « it is a female Cheilosia (you are right for that part) canicularis; our biggest Cheilosia (together with its much rarer or spring relatives C. orthotricha and C. himantopus). The larvae are bound to Petasites hybridus, but the adults can be often found surprisingly far away form the larval habitat. They have strong preferences for yellow composies flowers (eg high numbers in my garden since the end of August on Hypochaeris and Hieracium, no Petasites within 3 km range). They are not very common in Flanders, and rare and bound to the southern part in the Netherlands, but fairly common in the south of Belgium. »
Biotopes
Volwassen ex. bijna altijd op gele composieten (Hieracleum sp.) (zie oa Hieracium umbellatum. (Epervière en ombelle - Schermhavikskruid) - Asteraceae.
Larven op Petasites hybridus (Petasite officinale - Groot hoefblad) - Asteraceae.
Observations
